Skills: Innovative Technologies

One of Energy Solution’s key goals is to accelerate the commercialization and adoption of the latest and best energy-efficient technologies, including lighting, motors, HVAC, washers, dryers, water heating equipment and other energy-saving technologies. We promote these technologies through targeted marketing to customers and trade allies, innovative financing programs, and technical support.

Program Example: SCE and PG&E Monitor Rebate Program

Energy Solutions is implementing Computer Monitor Rebate Programs for SCE and PG&E. Through these Programs, the utilities have been developing partnerships with consumer electronics retailers throughout California in order to promote the most efficient, flat panel, LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) monitors available on the market. These ultra-efficient monitors, which are at least 25% more efficient than the ENERGY STAR® program requirements, use up to 80% less energy than an average Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) monitor. Both Programs aim to increase the market share of these monitors through marketing and incentives paid to either retailers or their customers. Successful implementation of these programs could lay the groundwork for other consumer electronics rebate programs that will help address the rapidly increasing plug loads.

Program Example: DART Emerging Technology Demonstration

To support PG&E's Emerging Technology Program, Energy Solutions is managing a single site demonstration of the Federspiel DART system. The DART system uses wireless sensors networked to a central controller that dynamically adjusts the supply and return fan speeds to save substantial energy both in the fan motor itself and in reduced reheat needs. Pre and post monitoring data will be used to estimate average annual energy savings, both to support a rebate for this installation and to develop a simple model for estimating energy use to support other installations. The project is also assessing customer acceptance and market opportunity for this measure.
