Sleep is Good More About Enabling Sleep Mode and EZ Save.

Enabling ENERGY STAR® settings for computer monitors is this program's main focus.

A monitor consumes about twice as much electricity as the CPU itself, so most ENERGY STAR "sleep mode" savings can be gained from enabling just the monitor.ZZZZZZZZ And, unlike the CPU, monitor power management is not known to cause problems on networks. So you don't need to worry that enabling will disrupt system performance.

Most computer monitors can be set for sleep mode. Computers with the Microsoft Windows NT operation systems (version 4.0 of earlier) do not support ENERGY STAR sleep settings. power strip In these cases the program can offer deep discounts on "smart" power strips that use a motion sensor to temporarily shut down the monitor or other equipment when a space is unoccupied.

Earn Incentive Payments

The program makes incentive payments to nonresidential customers for enabling the "sleep" mode on computer monitors. Network-based remote administration can expedite the enabling process, but the program pays whether you use a network tool or go machine-to-machine to change the settings.

Your incentives may be paid in the form of a check, in credits at your favorite computer equipment retailer or they can further buy-down the cost of discounted hardware. Using incentive payments to buy hardware both increases your energy savings and allows for a convenient no-cash transaction.

If you plan to apply for an incentive, contact us before you begin to discuss program requirements and availability of funds.

EZ Save

EZ Save and Other Network Tools to Enable Sleep Settings

When enabling sleep mode for groups of 50 computers or more, consider using the capabilities of the computers' local area network (LAN). Several network tools are available for the task, including EZ Save, free software from ENERGY STAR.

The U.S. Department of Energy, in conjunction with ENERGY STAR, has created the EZ Save suite of programs to manage monitor power usage easily and efficiently. The suite is a centrally-administered software tool that:

  • Polls computer on a network to determine each system's monitor power management settings
  • Generates reports on the result of the polling
  • Sets appropriate power management settings for workstation monitors on the network

EZ Save was developed to provide a simple program to manage monitor power management. EZ Save:

  • Uses the existing ENERGY STAR power management on your computers' Windows (95/98/ME/2000) operating system
  • Activates only those ENERGY STAR features of the workstation's monitor that allow monitors to enter a low-power mode during periods of inactivity
  • Will not activate any ENERGY STAR settings relating to the hard drive or system power
  • Provides a simple mechanism for activating many workstations through the use of a single command inserted into the network login script
  • Requires no special network programs (such as NLMs or Services), hardware, or technologies; also it does not install any start-up or memory-resident programs on user workstations or activate any special features on the network itself.

Common Questions from Users

Question #1:
Is it hard to activate ENERGY STAR Power Management (PM)?

Answer:
PM is simple to activate through options on your desktop. It takes less than a minute. Many computers already have it enabled.

Question #2:
Don't computers lose their network connections when they go into sleep mode?

Answer:
Because the program only enables the computer monitor, network connections are not affected.

Question #3:
If I have a screen saver, am I using PM and saving energy?

Answer:
Screen savers do not save money on utility bills or use less energy. Your monitor is still fully active when a screen saver is in use.

Question #4:
If my computer has the ENERGY STAR label on it, isn't it using less energy?

Answer:
Unless your ENERGY STAR power management feature is enabled, you will not enjoy the full energy -and money- saving benefits of your ENERGY STAR product.

Computer monitor ENERGY STAR savings are Safe, Simple, and Worthwhile.

Safe:
because the computer itself is not asleep. Move the mouse or hit a key and the monitor will wake up. No "sleep" settings for the CPU are changed, so there is no need to worry about losing unsaved documents or network connections. Long computations don't stop when the monitor sleeps. Today's equipment is designed around ENERGY STAR features; sleeping does not shorten its life.

Simple:
because the ENERGY STAR settings automatically power down your monitor.

Worthwhile:
because each time a monitor goes to sleep, it saves energy. With all of California's computers set this way, we could save as much electric power as is produced by a medium-sized powerplant. We could also save 430 thousand tons of CO2 emissions per year!

ENERGY STAR Technical Issues

Although ENERGY STAR features today are usually trouble-free, there are a few problems. Past problems with CPU power management include some network cards and networking software causing network connections to drop, and some older software causing a machine to freeze while it is in low-power mode. These problems are not common, but when they arise they tend to generate considerable work for information technology(IT) staff. The memory of such trouble has caused some IT professionals to routinely disable ALL power management in order to prevent possible conflicts.

The best solution in cases with network conflicts is to enable sleep settings for the monitor, but not for the CPU. Our program will not re-enable CPU sleep settings that have been turned off. With most operating systems it is possible to separately invoke monitor power management.

Fortunately, industry experts believe the most current generation of power management features and technology will solve many of the technical challenges of the past, while providing dramatic improvements in energy efficiency and performance.
