These pages are part of the Energy Solutions program to reduce connected plug load in offices in order to relieve electricity generation shortages in the Pacific Gas and Electric service territory. This program is funded by California utility customers and administered by Pacific Gas and Electric, under the auspices of the California Public Utilities Commission. Office plug load, along with its associated air conditioning needs, is the fastest growing electricity end use in the commercial sector. 1 US DOE-sponsored research, meanwhile, estimates that office machines alone provide energy savings potential of at least 25% of the 60 billion kWh consumed nationwide. 2

"In EBMUD's Administration Center alone, we
cut energy use nearly 20% by enabling ENERGY
STAR® monitor power management and other
equipment. Our lower energy consumption reduces peak period demands
on the power gird, while saving our customers money. The availability
of the EPA's free software package, which enables sleep settings through
the local area network, and responsiveness of the technical support
staff, were key elements of our energy reduction successes." "The Office Equipment Efficiency
Program, was easy to implement and gave our firm the ability to make
a public contribution by reducing peak electicity use during California's
energy crisis. Setting the automatic sleep mode for our computer monitors
has given our empolyees a cost effective and convenient way to save
energy at work." "The decision to participate in the Office Equipment
Efficiency program was simple. This free program allowed our property
management company to help tenants realize immediate energy savings
by enabling sleep mode on computer monitors in the building. The program
rewarded us with incentive payments that we used to purchase Wattstopper
'smart' power strips, allowing our tenants to save even more. These
measures have contributed to our goal of keeping tenants' costs reasonable
amid rising energy prices." "California was faced with the threat of power
outages and The Trust for Public Land looked for ways to cut overall
electricity usage. Power management is part of the solution and we anticipate
cutting the energy we use to power computers in half. The beauty of
the ENERGY STAR software
is that we put it into our network login script and it did all the work
for us. I spent only three to four hours testing, planning, and implementing
the software."
