Windows Me (Millennium Edition) Monitor Settings

Back to Monitor Configuration Page

To set or adjust your monitor for sleep mode in Windows Me: minimize all your open applications; then point your curser at the desk top background and right-click; choose Properties from the pop up menu

This brings up a dialog box titled "Display Properties". Go to the "Screen Saver" page; in the lower right-hand corner near the ENERGY STAR ® logo click the "Settings" button:

This brings up another dialog box where you choose the "Power Schemes" tab to see the power management settings:

We recommend setting the "Turn off monitor" time to 10 minutes.  If the setting is too long, you won't save as much energy during meetings and lunch.  You can still keep your screen saver if you have one; usually it would be set to activate in only a few minutes.  The above example pertains to a laptop computer; for a desktop model you will not see the "Running on batteries" section.

Please note, we do not recommend changing the power management settings for "System standby" or "Turn off hard disks" unless you check first with your technical support staff.  These features are not as safe as the monitor sleep setting. If they have been turned off, it may be because of a conflict with your network or software. However, if these features are already enabled and you aren't having frequent crashes when you leave your desk, then go ahead and leave them on.

Next, you will also need to make sure that your computer communicates correctly with the monitor.  Unless you have a very old monitor, it is almost sure to be ENERGY STAR compliant; however Windows may not know this.  Do this next: go to the "Settings" page of the same "Display Properties" dialog box...

... and hit the "Advanced" button in the lower right hand corner. You then get another dialog, and on that one choose the "Monitor" page:

Here you can make sure the "Monitor is Energy Star compliant" box is checked and click "Apply" if applicable.  Now you should be able to set the power-saving features as described above.

You will need adobe acrobat reader 4+ to view these files.
