Windows 2000 Monitor Settings

Back to Monitor Configuration Page

It is easy in Windows 2000 to set or adjust the sleep features for your computer monitor. The only catch with this version of Windows is that many machines have their configuration locked so that you need a system administrator to change settings.  If you get an "Access denied" message then you will need to work with your Information Technology staff to set up your machine for energy savings.

To set up this feature: minimize all your open applications; then point your cursor at the desktop background and right-click; then choose Properties from the pop up menu.

This brings up a dialog box titled "Display Properties". Go to the "Screen Saver" page; in the lower right-hand corner next to the ENERGY STAR ® logo click the "Power" button:

This brings up another dialog box titled "Power Options Properties"; go to the "Power Schemes" page of this dialog box:

We recommend setting the "Turn off monitor" time to 10 minutes.  If the setting is too long, you won't save as much energy during meetings and lunch.  You can still keep your screen saver if you have one; usually it would be set to activate in only a few minutes.  The above example pertains to a laptop computer; for a desktop model you will not see the "Running on batteries" section.

Please note, we do not recommend changing the power management settings for "Turn off hard disks", "System standby" and "System hibernates".  These features are not as safe as the monitor sleep setting. If these settings have been turned off, it may be because of conflicts with your network or software.  However, if these features are already enabled and you aren't having frequent crashes when away from your desk, then go ahead and leave them on.

If the "Turn off monitor" box is grayed out so that you cannot select or change it, this means Windows 2000 does not recognize your monitor as being ENERGY STAR compliant.  Unfortunately, in this version of Windows, there is no way for the user to manually tell Windows that your monitor is ENERGY STAR compliant. In this case, consult your IT support staff.
