Founded in 1995, Energy Solutions is an employee-owned clean energy and climate mitigation consulting firm. We deliver large-scale environmental benefits by engineering, designing, and implementing market-based energy efficiency and demand management solutions. We also develop policies that are better for businesses and better for society with a focus on equity and access. With nearly 400+ staff, we are honored to serve a diverse range of utility, public agency, commercial, and industrial clients. 

Energy Solutions interns will have opportunities to shine! As an intern, you can network across the company, connect with other interns, and present your work to supportive stakeholders. We offer paid remote internships with an expectation of 20 to 40 hours per week for a minimum of 10 to 12 weeks. This program is intended for students currently enrolled in an undergraduate program as a second to fourth-year student or enrolled in a graduate program. Unfortunately, we are unable to host international students this program year. All positions are fully remote. Our Summer cohort runs between May 2024 and August 2024, and our Fall cohort runs between September 2024 and November 2024. These opportunities, paired with Energy Solutions’ mission-driven approach, create a perfect environment for individuals who want to have an active voice in shaping the energy future.

2024 Internship Opportunities

Energy Efficiency

Building Electrification Intern

Remote – US

California is paving the way toward carbon-free homes and is leading the nation through decarbonization. As part of the Energy Efficiency Team, you will support TECH Clean California, the state’s flagship heat pump market transformation initiative for space and water heating. TECH Clean California makes installing heat pumps easy and accessible for contractors and customers, demonstrates scalable solutions to key market barriers via regional pilot projects, and informs the state’s decarbonization decision-making with public data, analyses, and case studies. You will support program implementation, market research, and data analysis while focusing on equity and environmental social justice. You will also get to choose a capstone project which will inform the team.

Energy Efficiency Intern 

Remote – US

Are you seeking an opportunity to gain insight into project management and hands-on experience supporting the Energy Efficiency department and Energy Solutions as a whole? In partnership with the Energy Efficiency Team, you will improve and work within Iris, our in-house platform that supports programs across multiple departments. Iris is a complicated software built, maintained, and improved upon by our engineers. In this day-to-day program support role, you will calculate and build energy savings, then test claims and savings in Iris. You will also facilitate automation within Iris and come at new training resources with fresh eyes, providing feedback to the Iris Academy team on the program’s effectiveness and ease of use.

Distributed Energy Resources

Distributed Energy Resources Intern

Remote – US

Enthusiastic about clean transportation, demand management, and energy storage? In partnership with the Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) Team, you will help the team optimize our approach to building a strong, intentional business development team. As DERs grows as a department, we are excited to think more about process limitations and how to improve upon them. You will help the team figure out how to decentralize early business development steps to help domain leaders identify and understand potential opportunities.

Solar Intern

Remote – US

Excited about solar? Join a dedicated team that builds programs to incentivize the adoption of distributed and community solar! This intern will be a part of a team working on a statewide incentive program aimed to assist people across to transition to solar power more affordably. Solar energy is critical in driving our nation’s progress toward a decarbonized grid, and you will play a material role in helping our team make this future a reality. This intern’s objective is to better define and organize training materials, program information, and operational tools for the team. There are two openings for this position.

Policy & Ratings

Policy and Ratings Intern

Remote – US

Are you ready for a hands-on learning experience? With a variety of projects and tasks to balance, plus a portion of your week dedicated to collaborating with the Policy & Ratings team, you will gain direct experience much like that of a department Associate. Your time with us will be varied: you will work along side other members of the team to gain experience on the building codes and appliance standards processes essential to P&R’s day-to-day work, use and expand existing tools to better understand the state standards compliance rates of appliances for sale in the state of New York, and have your own research project.

Your research project will be an opportunity for you to analyze the skills of the staff within the department using a survey and methodology you design yourself. We are looking for new ways to streamline our processes, improve communication, and break down silos of information with other departments and Energy Solutions as a whole. Your input and fresh outlook will be essential to improving our processes.

Business Strategy

Energy and Climate Justice in Business Development Intern

Remote – US

Are you dedicated to advancing environmental social justice? Interested in working with data? Enjoy thinking creatively about systems and operations? As a part of the Business Strategy Team, you will work with a passionate and mission-driven group to help us comprehensively integrate equity into our business development practices and processes. In this hybrid research and department support role, you will collect, compile, and analyze qualitative and quantitative data related to environmental social justice (ESJ) in the energy efficiency and clean energy space. You will then apply this data to help inform key business development strategies for integrating ESJ in our work and to help track, measure, and meet company strategic equity goals. These efforts will ensure that we create solutions that achieve equitable impacts and that equity plays a key role in determining which opportunities we pursue.

International Building Codes Intern

Remote – US

Are you an international energy wonk, or do you want to become one? In partnership with the Business Strategy Team, this intern will research international markets to help Energy Solutions expand our building codes advisory services. You will gain an understanding of building energy codes, advancing you toward an undergraduate or graduate degree in international relations, public policy, or an environmental or climate science-related discipline. This internship will also hone your abilities to research and report on the cutting edge of energy policy, as well as develop your presentation skills.

Trade Ally Strategy  

Supply Chain Research Intern 

Remote – US

Do you have an aptitude for research and data storytelling? As a Supply Chain Research Intern on the Trade Ally Strategy Team, you will research and map energy efficiency supply chains to bolster relationship management insights and analytics. By supporting a deeper understanding and navigation of supply chain networks, your efforts will be in service of Energy Solutions’ goals to deliver market-driven, environmental impacts.
